The Fasting Person has Two Delights

O those who fast, take the glad tidings of Allah’s Promise that He promised you, for He does not break His promise, as He said in His Book. This is because lying is impossible to ascribe to Him. Congratulations! Indeed, your fast’s reward is multiplied! And you will have a delight on the day of encountering your Lord’s Reward when you find your deeds; when you find the reward of your fasting stored away for you - when you are in greatest need of it. Congratulations on getting Allah’s Bounty and Generosity and Giving! Congratulations for this great generosity and plentiful giving from the Lord of the Worlds! And thank Allah for His abundant generosity and endowing!

It came in the qudsiyy hadith that was narrated by Al-Bukhariyy from the route of Abu Hurayrah - may Allah accept his deeds - that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Every good deed of the son of Adam is multiplied; one good deed is multiplied from 10 to 700 times - except fasting, for surely, that is usually done only for My Sake, and I reward generously for it. He puts his food and his desires to the side for My Sake. The fasting person has two delights: a delight upon breaking his fast, and a delight when he meets the judgment of his Lord, and indeed, the fasting person’s changed breath is more fragrant to Allah than the smell of musk. Fasting is a shield.”

As for his delight in the earthly life upon breaking his fast for completing that day so that his strength would return, he will be delighted by two endowments: Allah’s endowing the fasting upon him; that Allah gave him the Divine Success to fast this day, and His endowment upon him by enabling him to consume the good that Allah made lawful for him by allowing him to eat, drink, and have sexual intercourse.

As for the second delight, when encountering the judgment of his Lord in the Afterlife upon the Questioning; when Allah speaks to His slaves with His Speech, questioning them about their deeds with His Speech that is neither of letter nor sound- and it is not a condition that this fasting person is pious, rather, it is a condition that his fast would be valid and devoid of what eradicates its reward- he will be delighted about what he finds of the everlasting bliss in the abode of peace. Then, those who fasted will be summoned from one of the gates of Paradise that is especially for those who used to fast. It is called “Ar-Rayyan.” It shall be called out: “Where are those who used to fast?” Then, when they enter, that gate will be sealed, and no one other than them will enter with them.

It is reported in Sahih Al-Bukhariyy about the Prophet ﷺ, that he said:

“Surely, in Paradise, there in a gate; it is called Ar-Rayyan. Those who used to fast enter through it, and other than them do not. Once they enter, it is sealed, and it shall not be opened for other than them.”

And it is there where shall be the biggest delight and the greatest victory: when it is said to them:

<Eat and drink merrily for what you used to do in the days that have passed.>

(Al-Haqqah)

That is when they find the reward of the fasting when they are most in need of it.

Allah the Exalted said:

<The Day when every soul finds what it did of good present.>

 (‘Al ^Imran)

And these two delights are both distinct, and it is the result relying on Allah for reward, and patience and obedience to Allah throughout the entire day of hardship, and detaining the self from the desires for the sake of the Lord of the Worlds.

Furthermore, ponder on the aforementioned saying of the Prophet ﷺ: “A delight upon encountering the judgment of his Lord.” Firstly, he said: “a farhah (delight; happiness).” This, as mentioned in the dictionary “Lisan Al-^Arab,” is indefinite, and this indicates that it is a big delight; a delight that has reached the extent of delightfulness.

A delight upon encountering the judgment of his Lord”; in the earthly life, the believing slave did not carry a burden of worry nor of distress more than his worry and distress about standing to be judged by Allah. Then, behold! The fasting person will find himself being judged while he is delighted. He finds the delight when he was most in need of it, on the day when the people stand for the Lord of the Worlds. On Judgment Day, the people will stand from their graves, for Allah’s Command and His Recompense. We ask Allah for the pardon and to not be exposed, out of His Generosity and Nobility!

Al-Bukhariyy narrated in his Sahih from ^Abdullah Ibn ^Umar - may Allah accept his and his father’s deeds - that the Prophet ﷺ said about the sixth verse of Surat Al-Mutaffifin, which means: <The Day when the people stand for the Lord of the Worlds>: “Until one would disappear in his own perspiration, up to the middle of his ears”. Perspiration is sweat.

From here, one takes the good news: He takes his food to break his fast, for the early delight that occurs in the earthly life, which reminds him of the greater delight when he encounters the judgment of His Lord. So, one cannot hold himself back when breaking his fast from fondly making supplication to his Lord to save him in his Afterlife, and that his Lord completes for him that delight when he is at his station being judged by his Lord. The fasting person has a supplication that is not rejected when he breaks his fast, so that is a moment of mercy. We ask Allah to make for us and for you the most abundant share of it. And when the people are sad on that day of sadness, those who used to fast will be happy. And when objectionable things affect the people on that day of questioning, that day when the people stand for the Lord of the Worlds, the fasting person will find the generosity from his Lord.

O Allah! Surely, we have called upon You, so answer our call!

Forgive for us, O Allah, our sins and our transgressing in our affair!

O Allah! Forgive the Believers, male and female, living and dead!

O Allah! Cover our defects, and make us safe from what we fear, and suffice us from what worries us!
